This weekend we had a wonderful visit from my hubby’s brother and his family from Pennsylvania. My sister-in-law is almost 20 years younger than I am but we get along beautifully. She loves all the things I do and I was amazed at all the different things I could share with her. It was nice I was able to share a few of my life learned tips and tricks with her. While the guys were busy outside we had fun digging out the sewing machine and whipping up a couple aprons and skirts that she and my niece could take home with them.
Even though I would not consider myself a good seamstress I do know my way around a sewing machine and was able to show my sister-in-law a few things about sewing. As we spent the weekend together I was happy to show her how to do a few things that I have taken for granted for years.
Little things like…
- How to knot the thread on a needle
- How to thread a sewing machine
- What happens when the tension is not correct
- Why you should always cut fabric with the grain
- How to make homemade fabric starch – (1 T corn starch & 1 pint cold water – mix and put in spray bottle)
I didn’t realize until this weekend just how many things I take for granted. My job as a seasoned homemaker is to make sure all the little things I have floating around in my head are shared with all the women around me.
I just have to say a big thank-you to my Mom who made sure all her girls knew all those little things and is still teaching us to this day. There are still many times I still call my Mom for guidance and hope I can pass as much on to my girls as she has passed onto me over the years.
